Il Castello di Desenzano, che domina la città, sorge probabilmente sui resti di un precedente castrum romano, eretto a difesa delle invasioni barbariche. Ricostruito in epoca comunale, fu rafforzato nel XV secolo, quando al suo interno si contavano circa 120 abitazioni e una chiesa dedicata a Sant'Ambrogio. Nonostante gli ampliamenti destinati a ospitare una guarnigione, il castello continuò a fungere principalmente da rifugio per la popolazione.

La struttura ha una pianta rettangolare irregolare, con il mastio principale sul lato nord, a protezione dell’ingresso e del ponte levatoio, di cui sono ancora visibili le feritoie per le catene. Il mastio si distingue per la sua imponenza e austerità, con finestre presenti solo nella parte superiore.

Alla fine dell’Ottocento il castello fu adattato a caserma, funzione mantenuta fino al 1943.

Il restauro delle mura consente oggi di percorrere il camminamento di ronda e di salire al mastio d’ingresso, da cui si apre un suggestivo panorama sul Lago di Garda, ideale per i visitatori e per fotografie spettacolari. Negli ex alloggi degli ufficiali, accuratamente restaurati, sono state ricavate sale dedicate a mostre e convegni.

The Castello di Desenzano, overlooking the town, is likely built on the remains of a Roman castrum originally intended to defend against barbarian invasions. It was rebuilt during the medieval communal period and reinforced in the 15th century, when it contained around 120 houses and a church dedicated to Sant'Ambrogio. Despite the expansions meant to accommodate a garrison, the castle continued to serve primarily as a refuge for the local population.

The castle has an irregular rectangular plan, with the main keep (mastio) on the north side, protecting the entrance and the drawbridge, whose chain slots are still visible today. The mastio stands out for its imposing and austere appearance, with windows only in the upper section.

At the end of the 19th century, the castle was further modified and converted into a barracks, a role it maintained until 1943.

The restoration of the walls now allows visitors to walk along the ramparts and climb the entrance mastio, from which a stunning view of Lago di Garda unfolds, perfect for sightseeing and photography. The former officers’ quarters have been skillfully restored and now host exhibition and conference rooms.

Das Castello di Desenzano, das über der Stadt thront, wurde vermutlich auf den Überresten eines römischen Castrums errichtet, das zum Schutz vor barbarischen Invasionen diente. In der kommunalen Epoche wurde es neu aufgebaut und im 15. Jahrhundert verstärkt, als sich innerhalb etwa 120 Häuser und eine Kirche zu Sant'Ambrogio befanden. Trotz der Erweiterungen, die für eine Garnison vorgesehen waren, diente die Burg weiterhin hauptsächlich als Zufluchtsort für die Bevölkerung.

Die Anlage hat einen unregelmäßigen rechteckigen Grundriss, mit dem Hauptmastio auf der Nordseite, der den Eingang und die Zugbrücke schützt – deren Kettenöffnungen noch heute sichtbar sind. Der Mastio imponiert durch seine massive und strenge Erscheinung, mit Fenstern nur im oberen Bereich.

Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde das Schloss weiter verändert und in eine Kaserne umgewandelt, eine Funktion, die es bis 1943 behielt.

Dank der Restaurierung der Mauern können Besucher heute den Wehrgang begehen und den Eingangsmastio erklimmen, von dem sich ein beeindruckender Blick auf den Lago di Garda eröffnet – ideal für Besichtigungen und spektakuläre Fotos. Die ehemaligen Offiziersunterkünfte wurden sorgfältig restauriert und beherbergen heute Ausstellungs- und Konferenzräume.
